The Merchants House - WIP

A dreary day today, so great for modelling. My girls next to me, a final coat of Modge/Water/Detergent mix over the 2 ruined supports, and then....

....I cut some foam, grabbed a base and went to town. This is a pcitorial description of today and a decent look into how I build stuff..

5cm block of styrofoam, glued to a scrap MDF base.

Ring around with foundation blocks, leaving space for the doors. The white bit on the side is a cellar entrance.

Large matches make great support bits for doors.

Add the rest of the blocks (same as the foundation blocks, just cut in half lengthwise) and keep the corners block free.

Some space left on top of the top row of blocks, more on this later.

Large supports added on all sides using discarded fireworks left by the bucketload each year.

Rubberbands; a hobbyists friend. Until they snap, then they are bad friends....

There will be a stairway, so we need some poles to support that.

The stairway leads up to a platform, that also needs a support. Toothpick, drill, glue, snip when dry and then sand down.

Horizontal post will be put in later as it needs more work.

Horizontal posts pinned in place by drilling a hole and and jamming a toothpick through with some glue. The platform will be made seperately so it is easier to paint the building etc.

And then I realised I forgot to add a chimney....oops!

Below is how it stands now.

So, you might be wondering, what am I looking at? Well, I also want a few houses for Mordheim, but I like a nice story to go with it to explain little details and makes it feel alive. Sort of. So, this is a Merchants house. In the front will be 2 big doors that will be bolted closed with heavy chain, and a smaller door in the back, also bolted down with heavy chain. There may or may not be a tiny tentacle peeking out from under the door... The basement door will not be locked, I will count it as a location you can pop out from if you can tunnel or do hidden movement. It has heavy walls and no windows as this is where he keeps his stock.

First floor will be pretty ruined. It might not even have a roof. Not sure yet :)

You only Brick twice

Weekend, sick kids, cramped hands.....but we carry on.

2 ruined supportss are now ready, all the sand should have set by now, might add another thinned coat of Mod Podge, water and detergent tonight for extra extra security and strength. Might have the time to basecoat them tomorrow evening, or just let it dry for another 12 hours.

Another one for the 50 cent challenge. 25 cents at the Goodwill for a hardwood, carved, slightly busted and garishly painted Buddah. I'll save the poor chap, and he gets the same treatment as the ruins. More 28mm scaled but will work as a really large one for 20mm.

Base is pretty much done, basecoat, 2 highlights. Matte varnish next, then tufts and dust and they are ready for whatever :)

20mm PLO - small pictorial of a recent order

These are the latest 20mm PLO I picked up from RH Models (aka Liberation). Picture of each with the code so I can remember what I have painted later and know what else to order.

Always almost flawless casts, and cheaper than many others!....something many producers should learn tbh...life is too short to fill dozens of holes before you can paint.

What I will be working towards to, so I need to find 2 beret guys in my stash and sculpt them kefiyehs. Also need to find some spare M-16s

PLO COM - 7 man command group

PLO RPK - 3 man RPK LMG

PLO 14A - Young Lions (aka kids) with RPK

WEA48 -  4x PKM on pintle mount...very handy for pick ups, guard towers and upgrading APC's

PLO RPD - 3x RPD LMG

PLO SNI - 3x Dragunov sniper

PLO PRO SNI - 2x prone Dragunov snipers

ARA DICT - 2x Arab dictator, 1 with kefiyeh and medals, 1 slighty taller. Guy on the left makes a perfect Iranian officer.

PLO RPG - 2x RPG-7

PLO PKM - 3x PKM

PLO DRIV - driver for jeeps, trucks etc
PLO 145 - seated gunner for AA guns
PLO STPKM - standing PKM gunner for pickup, truck or APC

PLO AK47 - 10 guys with an AK

Bricks, Sir! Thousands of them!

2 of the busted supports should be done tomorrow and ready for basecoat, and the baseprimer has been done for the sand on the 4 ruined ones. Plus several washes for toning the colours of the stones.

Drybrushed the first ruins. Knackered my wrists. Ouch.

Did the basic coats on the ruins.

Drybrush Grey
Drybrush Grey and Dark Green mix
Drybrush Grey and Dark Sand mix
Drybrush Grey+Dark Sand+Offwhite mix
Drybrush Offwhite

Also works nice when painting a torched wooden house!

Now to put my hands in a bucket of ice.

Paint it Black-Grey - WIP Brickwork

After a wee too many meetings today, I've set the aquaduct aside to add more bricks tonight. Slappeed on a mix of Black Gesso and grey paint that dries waterproof on it for a base. I'll toutch up any spots I missed tonight, and let it dry for a while to make sure it has fully hardend. Handling the brush for the past 30 minutes killed me a bit, so the rest of the work shall be done with sponges...gives a more natural pattern anyway.

And here is a picture of black grey basecoated ruined walls. :D

Edit: I'll also be cutting down the arches a bit to make it more in tune with realism, and trimming the base of the large section to make it a lot narrower....ease of storage and transportation.

Edit: The first walls just got another coat of grey and black, with mixed in Mod Podge for extra strength. Depending on the time available tomoprrow, I might get started on painting that section. Spent another 2 hours or so on the aquaduct/viaduct/whatever, trimed the sides of the large bridge top a size my storage space would agree to more. I have a few hours spare in the morning and set aside for either adding more stonework, or....

The lot I have now spans 1 metre across. I think I will add some more ruined arches to I can pick and mix or span the full 6 feet of a table if I wanted to. Might as well go for broke, right?
